Nausea and eating · call recap

When not eating starts to feel like the win

9 May 202511 attendedHeld by Tomás

Jonah joined this call at my request, and I would ask him again. Somewhere in the third week of a difficult month, for some people, not eating stops being a symptom and starts being the one part of a hard fortnight that appears to be going well. That is a specific turn and it needs naming out loud, once, kindly, before anybody is in difficulty rather than after.

Where the room started

Practically. Somebody asked how little is too little, which is not a question I will answer with a figure and I said so. What I did say is that the question itself is the useful signal: when a person starts asking how little they can get away with, the conversation has quietly changed shape and it is worth noticing.

Nobody in the room was in trouble as far as either of us could tell. That is exactly why we did it then.

What Jonah said

He was brief and I will not improve on it by paraphrasing much. A medication that reduces appetite is not a neutral object in a life that has had a difficult relationship with appetite. For some people the reduction is a relief and stays a relief. For some, it hands them a mechanism for something older, and it will feel like health while it is happening, because it arrives wearing the clothes of a health plan.

He said the thing he says: if that shape turns up in your own thinking, this circle and his are both fine places to say so early, and nothing dramatic happens when you do.

What came up afterwards

More than either of us expected. Four people spoke about a period in their own lives, in some cases decades ago, that they had not mentioned in this circle. Nobody gave any detail and nobody was asked for any. Two asked about the recovery-aware circle and how it works. One said she had been waiting for somebody else to raise it first, which is the whole reason we raise it first.
