Facilitator — eating-disorder aware practice
“Recovery-aware does not mean fragile. It means careful.”
I facilitate the circles where the ground is least stable: ed-recovery-aware, food-noise-quiet and body-image. I did eating-disorder peer support for four years before I had ever heard of a GLP-1, and when these medications arrived in the lives of people I was already sitting with, I did not have a tidy answer. I still do not. What I have is a practice.
The practice is roughly this. We do not talk in numbers. We do not compare intakes. We notice out loud when a conversation has quietly turned into a competition, because it usually happens without anyone intending it. And when a member says something that sounds like restriction wearing the clothes of a health plan, I say so — kindly, once, in the open, and then I stay with them afterwards. That last part is the part people miss.
I want to be honest about the tension, because pretending it is not there would be worse. A drug that reduces appetite is not a neutral object in a life that has had a disordered relationship with appetite. Some people in this community have found it steadying. Some have found it dangerous. Both are true and neither cancels the other, and anyone who tells you it is simple is selling something.
If you are reading this and something in it landed, our support-resources page lists the kinds of services worth finding in a few regions. It is not a substitute for anything. It is a start.

When the noise goes quiet
When the noise goes quiet
eating
For the weeks when food has stopped being interesting and you are not sure you are eating enough. Gentle, practical, and written with recovery in mind.
eating
The phrase everyone uses and nobody defines. What members mean, what is and is not known about it, and why its absence is not always simple.
mind
Written by Jonah, who holds our recovery-aware circle: how to notice when something has changed direction, and how to find real help from wherever you are.
mind
The culture that has grown up around these medicines is not neutral scenery — it is a market, and you are standing inside it while trying to make a health decision.
